This is pretty short...but I understand why some people don't like McLaren growing like this, beginning to resemble Porsche in terms of market points with their cars. I, myself am unsure. When McLaren built the F1, that was pretty much the only road car they had ever built. However, what if McLaren had budget x100 of what they had for the F1 back then? Would they likely be building some of the best and highest performing sports cars money could buy at the same price points as Porsche does? I feel like the answer would be yes. I'm not that familiar with McLaren's history before the 90s, but these are just some thoughts.

This is probably a good thing and the only way to stay alive for the future.

Some gifs I've made in the past for your time.

Are people upset that they are expanding? Really? Idiots.

IDK how well they would've done back then, though. They planned on selling 300 F1's, but just barely sold 100. It's whatever the market will bear at the time.

What if Koenigsegg expended their lineup? What if CVK offered a 200k car and a 500k car?

I guess I'm an idiot.

When McLaren only made the F1, its exclusivity made it timeless, and therefore we valued McLaren highly. The MP4-12C was acceptable, but now that they have a whole bunch of different cars, all similarly-styled, McLaren is now your normal sports car manufacturer, and they no longer have that same charm as the F1 did.

Can't remember the one named after a fax machine - MP3-12C? To me, it's one of the loveliest, most understated supercars. And Clarkson said it had a great ride. And fine by me if they make more cars, different cars. Does anyone complain you can get a 911 Targa with 57 different paint codes, or 95 combinations of options? Nope.

It's getting ridiculous the way people are crying over the fact that McLaren are expanding. I love the argument that people keep coming back too is that McLaren are ruining their "heritage" brought on by the F1 but are conveniently ignoring that for the most part McLaren's history has consisted of modifying other people's car such as the SLR, this Mustang

and the GNX.

Plus while we are on dumb criticism. How comes Lamborghini are allowed to build two very similar cars for over a decade but McLaren aren't.

Maybe because Lamborghini doesn't photocopy their flagship supercar at 90% and 80%?

My view is that more pretty, fast cars is not a bad thing. I only hope that normal people car makers also catch onto the idea of sports car-ing all the things.

And they also didn't modify the SLR, they built it Mercedes was their engine supplier in F1 so the collaborated on the car..

The Reventon was extremely exclusive, and therefore lost media attention quickly.

The Aventador continued their line of flagship V12 supercars.

The Huracan is... The problem with Lamborghini right now . Audi wants to reach a comfortable spot with Lamborghini, and doing that to their line of larger-market supercars was their way of doing it.

McLaren was known for only one production car at a time, and for being pretty damn wild. Now they're pumping out cash cows quicker than Mitsubishi Mirage's are being sold.

Charm doesn't make shareholders happy. A successful and popular sports car company makes shareholders happy. Competition is only good for this market, it will make Ferrari, Porsche, Aston, Mercedes, try to catch up. This will lead to more carbon, at cheaper prices. This is only good for us.

If CVK did that we would probably be having the same discussion just replace McLaren w/ Koenigsegg.

I'm glad they are doing it, I hope it pushes Ferrari et. al. further to actually innovate and not produces special edition 30423 of the 458 just because they can. For your truly bonkers idea Horacio Pagani gets in on this trend as well.

For the record I would take the McLaren over the Porsche for the price point, unless doctors and lawyers start driving McLarens and you can't throw a rock without hitting one.

I find it interesting that you believe that is a problem. Either way I disagree and think that both Lamborghini and McLaren are doing the right thing since firstly I want them to still be around in the coming years and secondly I'd rather them offer a multitude of sports cars then start building SUVs. Speaking of which I hope Lotus get the shit together and follow them rather than Porsche that said I would like a new Carlton.

Good point, but I'd rather have a McLaren that feels and drives like a McLaren rather than a McLaren that feels and drives like every other supercar just so that they could sell more.

I think it's fantastic. McLaren always seem to one up themselves with all their cars; even though the P1 has fell short to the 918 on some tracks. But if they had the budget they have now, back in the 90s, would they sell now for the price of Porsches? I don't think so. The 570S I think will be the cheapest car they make; at least for a while. Porsche make sports cars. McLaren make supercars, to compete against Ferrari, Lamborghini and others..

Does the F40 have less charm or desirability because the Mondial exists?

or is the the 918 or 550 spyder less desirable because of the 924?

Is Die Hard no longer the greatest movie of all time because of "A Good Day to Die Hard"?

is the F1 honestly less desirable, exclusive or timeless because of the 570S?

I don't think so. They stand on their own merits, only now McLaren can turn a profit and make cars like the P1.

The F1 is just as desirable. McLaren will never build anything like it anymore though, because of their surge in soulless cash cows.

I'd say the P1 is a fairly strong argument against that statement, and that they can do so because they were so successful making 'affordable' sports cars.

I think the P1 is just as desirable, and if i was 7 I'd probably have one of those on my bedroom wall instead of the F1 GTR I had growing up.

I understand your stance though, I just think it's too sentimental and clouded by nostalgia.
